E3 is Dead: Lots of Commentary

Monday, July 31st, 2006

E3 is cancelled.

But not really.

It’s being restructured.

But it IS cancelled for next year at least.

Because big exhibitors pulled out. EA? Activision? MS? Nintendo? Sony? Who qualifies as a big exhibitor at E3?

MS guy says it’s a “perfect storm” of three damaging factors.

Humorous commentary and insider thoughts.

C-A-D commentary: nostalgic.

It’s too bad. I was hoping to see at least one of these famously over-the-top trade shows. I suppose something will step in to fill the void.

Transcendence

Friday, July 28th, 2006

This quote resonated with me:

“Stubblefield contended that as long as methods were available that allowed people to dissolve the ego and kill time–not while away the time, not pass it, but annihilate it–they would seek out those methods regardless of the risks involved. The ecstasy of living completely in the present moment, which almost everyone experiences briefly in sexual orgasm, mystics access during deep meditation, shamans savor as a reward for their psychedelic ordeals, and some artists stumble upon gratuitously when they lose themselves in their work, that egoless euphoria was, according to Stubblefield, at the core of transcendence, the liberated state of elevated innocence for which every human animal unwittingly hungers. Transcendence was, quite literally, heaven on earth…” - Tom Robbins, Villa Incognito

I hope I never again work for a company that values a necktie more than job skills.

AD Syndication and Movie

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

According to this Business Week article Arrested Development lives on! Microsoft will be streaming episodes of the show for free, HDNet has purchased the rights to show it in HD, and G4 has purchased the basic cable rights. G4 is finally going to have something worth watching. Add this to the fact that there may be an Arrested Development movie on the way.

String Theory

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

Remember in physics class when your professor said that string theory physicists believe that there are ten dimensions? And you asked for more explanation, but the professor couldn’t really explain it very well? TenthDimension.com has a cool animation explaining it. It will blow your mind.

New FIFA Rankings

Friday, July 14th, 2006

FIFA published their first new world rankings table since the end of the World Cup. The USA is no longer in the top ten (we were ranked fifth going into the tournament). Brazil is still untoppled in the number one spot, despite not making to the last four teams in the Cup. Italy’s win catapulted them from thirteenth to second. Good to see Ghana getting some props–now ranked 25th. I think they deserve to be in the top twenty.

Project Gray Company

Friday, July 14th, 2006

I thought this announcement might be coming. EA has announced that their next-gen open-world rpg Project Gray Company is, in fact, their next Lord of the Rings title. It has now been renamed to The Lord of the Rings: The White Council, which is not as cool as Project Gray Company. I’m pretty psyched about this game, even though it looks a lot like Oblivion, which I thought was overrated.
